About Alluvial Farms

Founded in 2015, Alluvial Farms is rooted in a passion for sustainable agriculture, animal welfare, and community connection. Located on the foothills of Sumas Mountain in Whatcom County, Washington, the farm produces pasture-raised, Animal Welfare Approved pork and value-added products for regional families who care about regenerative practices and knowing the farmers behind their food.

From the beginning, Alluvial has aimed to balance ecological health with productive agriculture—raising hogs outdoors on pasture, improving soil through rotational grazing, embracing whole-animal utilization, and enhancing ecosystem services. The result is pork that reflects both ethical care and exceptional quality, along with innovative offshoots like pet treats made from organ meats and handcrafted skin-care products made from rendered lard. Each product honors the animals and the land that sustain the farm.

Alluvial Farms is owned and operated by Matt McDermott, who brings more than twenty years of experience in sustainable agriculture, including a M.S. in Community and Agriculture, formal training in Ecological Horticulture, and collaboration with a variety of farm training and production systems.  Matt leads a small team of passionate land and animal stewards who share his vision of a regional food system built on transparency, integrity, and care. Together, they manage every step—from pasture to processing to customer—ensuring that each decision reflects respect for animals, people, and place.

Beyond production, Alluvial Farms opens its gates seasonally for on-farm events and tours, inviting the community to connect directly with the land, animals, and people behind their food.

Through this work, Alluvial Farms continues to pursue a simple but powerful mission: to raise animals humanely, manage land responsibly, and create nourishing products that strengthen both bodies and communities—one pasture at a time.

  • “It was such a pleasure to see your farm last year - not only was I impressed by how you’re raising your pigs, but also by your resourceful use of things like Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (for stream restoration) and USDA EQIP funds (for compost facility construction and other barnyard enhancements).”

  • “We are extremely happy with our purchase and will be ordering again in the future. Our kids loved seeing the pigs (and piglets) when we came out to the pumpkin patch. I hope the pumpkins will be a yearly thing. That was also a great value and experience. ”

  • “We love Alluvial Farms. Over the past two years, we have purchased from them on multiple occasions and have experienced superior quality throughout the entire process. It is good to know the farmers who raise the food that you eat. And it’s even better to know farmers who care so deeply for their work, land, and animals. To sum it up: support your local farmers, especially these local farmers.”
